About Our Church
Our History
The church was founded in 1998 following an evangelization carried out by the Late Rev. Fr. Patrick Adegbite and a few legionaries. Prior to this residents in Sangotedo attended masses in far away catholic churches like The Church of the Assumption, Falomo; St Charles Borromeo, 1004. The few faithfuls gathered in a small hut to pray on Sundays. The name Regina Pacis meaning Queen of Peace was suggested by these few catholic worshipers then.
The place of worship moved from a large open space in an uncompleted building with permission to use just for Sunday services to Lily Child School Sangotedo village. The villagers however mounted pressure on the school to relocate the church, the early worshipers had to move elsewhere until 2004 when Fr Adegbite sought the assistance of Mrs Patricia Nwaiwu, a catholic and she gave her premises (inside the estate) for use by the church at no cost. For the various contributions of Mrs Nwaiwu to the affairs of Regina Pacis, she is referred to as the “Pillar” of Regina Pacis church Sangotedo. Brother Peter Afuwape the present parish catechist was deployed by Fr. Adegbite to conduct services in the station.
Shortly after the death of Rev. Fr. Patrick Adegbite, Rev. Fr. Cosmas Mordi was directed to take over the affair of Regina Pacis. Regina Pacis later became an out station under Catholic Church of the Transfiguration and with the assistance of Rev. Fr. M.O Teko the church bought 3.5 (three & half) plots of land in 2008 within Peace Estate, the present church location.
In 2009, Fr. Francis Anyanwu took over and the church with an outstation Immaculate Heart, Magbon. The church became a Quasi Parish on the 14th of June 2011 and was assigned a Priest-in-charge Rev. Fr. Martin Iwueze who took over the affairs of the parish on 10th November, 2011.
Rev. Fr Martin further grew the church to become a parish, acquired more plots of land, built the Rev Frs Parish house, a more befitting church building, acquired lands for church clinic and schools among other achievements. His motto was “adding value to value”.
